Tony Kishawi

Opening up digital possibilities for the community

Tony Kishawi is creative director of Lightwire Theatre Productions in Gympie and is a passionate advocate for local communities to participate and benefit from the digital world.

Tony lives by the philosophy 'see a need, fill a need'. After constantly being asked by his theatre audience for a weekly 'what's on', Tony saw wider possibilities for promoting local events. He volunteered to set up and run two websites: WhatsOnInGympie.com.au and GympieBoxOffice.com.au.

The websites connect the region's residents with events at Gympie's Heritage Theatre and in the wider community. A weekly e-newsletter, which is liked to social media, is also produced using content from the websites.

Tony and another volunteer also attend local events each week to film them and later post the videos on Tony's blog, www.whatsoningympie.com.au making them available to the community

Tony is currently looking for new ways to assist community groups and local business to use available technology to promote themselves and their events. He is investigating possibilities at the weekly growers' market to help farmers:

  • promote their produce and/or their knowledge, such as clean, green agriculture, online
  • develop new revenue streams
  • expand their businesses.

He is in the early days of developing an idea for a 'Window to the World', to create opportunities for people to make themselves more widely known online. Tony insists people have great stories to tell—they just need some digital assistance to get them out there, whether it be via video blogging or other digital forms of documentation and content creation.

Tony is also a sought-after speaker, workshop coordinator, trainer, producer and director.

As a digital champ, Tony will work with Gympie Council to encourage businesses in his region to participate in the global digital marketplace. He will also continue to maintain his websites, seek out stories for weekly videos and develop his idea for Window to the World.

Tony is nominated by: Gympie Regional Council
