Tammie Scharf - Round 1, 2019 Champion

Inspiring global citizens from regional Queensland

Located in Bowen

Tammie Scharf is teaching school students and Queensland educators how to harness the positive power of online collaboration.

Tammie is the digital technologies teacher at Queens Beach State School. Through digital technologies, she helps bring the world into the school’s classrooms to engage students in 21st century learning. She teaches all students, from Prep to Year 6, encouraging them to be global citizens and opening their minds to opportunities that aren’t limited by their rural environment. Tammie was also responsible for her school becoming part of the Makerspace & Young Entrepreneurs trials run by Education Queensland.

Her enthusiasm for online collaboration began when she started writing a class blog in 2013. She shared her story with parents and other educators across the globe. This introduced her to the power of online and offline collaboration, leading her to found QLD Tech Brekkies with three local teachers. It started as a group of local educators meeting at cafes to inspire each other with new tech resources. It now exists as an online space connecting teachers all over Queensland.

Tammie is also promoting the opportunities of digital technologies by:

  • daily social media posts on all things tech
  • supporting other educators who are starting their digital technologies journey
  • hosting professional development events.

In addition, she willingly shares and encourages other staff members to engage with unfamiliar modes of delivery to increase their confidence levels.

As a digital champion, Tammie will run parent information sessions around digital safety. She will continue to use her social media, local networking, information and professional development activities to promote how digital technologies can add to learning. Tammie will continue to coordinate and grow QLD Tech Brekkies, and open worldwide doors to her regional students and colleagues.

Tammie is nominated by: Queens Beach State School
