Retha Scheepers - Round 1, 2017 Champion

Nurturing the innovation generation

Retha Scheepers is a local legend in her community when it comes to supporting and nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs and leaders.

She is a Senior Lecturer in Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Sippy Downs, and is also an adjunct at the University of Southern Queensland and the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. In her role, she creates opportunities for undergraduate and post-graduate students in business, the creative industries and sciences. With a solid understanding of where business potential lies, she personally encourages students to launch start-ups involving digital innovation.

Retha is a volunteer organiser of Silicon Coast, a local digital entrepreneur network. She is also the lead organiser for Startup Weekend. These initiatives create opportunities for entrepreneurial students to extend their network, share, grow their start-ups, and meet like-minded individuals. Many attendees at Startup Weekend have technical backgrounds, thus Retha is constantly immersed in evolving digital-based products, solutions and mechanisms.

Retha contributes to digital innovation by:

  • providing online learning resources about lean start-up processes and digital marketing opportunities
  • promoting an intense #hashtag battle to digitally connect the Sunshine Coast Startup Weekend with other weekends occurring globally
  • creating an online mentoring space that matches expert entrepreneurs with new and promising start-ups
  • undertaking research on the subject of information technology driving innovation in small business.

Retha has been awarded a National Office for Learning and Teaching (OLT) Citation (2015) for inspiring entrepreneurship students and a National Association for Tertiary Education Management (ATEM) Award for Excellence in Community Engagement, and Vice Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Engagement (2015).

As a digital champion, Retha is releasing an online video boot camp, which will provide start-up founders with tools and know-how to navigate their businesses through the early stages. Volunteering as an organiser at the annual Sunshine Coast Startup Weekend also remains high on her priority list, as does Silicon Coast, which will both continue to brand the Sunshine Coast as much for its tech scene as for its beaches.

Retha is nominated by: Sunshine Coast Council
