Reid Moule - Round 1, 2017 Champion

Consultation has concluded

Preparing for the unknown

School teacher Reid Moule knows the world is changing. He knows that teaching technology is the key, not only for his students to keep up with the rapid pace, but to prepare them as innovators and leaders.

Based at Humpybong State School north of Brisbane, Reid has coached and supported colleagues to implement the new digital technologies curriculum as part of the school’s Australian launch school status. With the new curriculum now rolling out, Reid has moved into a fulltime role as the school’s digital literacy coach. He teaches students from Prep to Year 6, and provides support to teachers and support staff.

Reid became interested in the digital economy when he began to see that the impending changes were not simply new technologies or approaches, but a significant underlying change to social and economic organisation. He knew the change would require a complete rethink of work itself, and of the social compact. He realised it was necessary to prepare students by teaching them about the structure and functions of the emerging digital economies. His focus is on computational thinking, coding, electronics, social change and innovation.

Reid helps students, teachers and parents prepare for the changing digital environment by:

  • providing professional development for all teachers and support staff in the new curriculum
  • leveraging digital technologies in the planning of units of work
  • providing technical expertise and resources to help teachers upskill in all areas of technology
  • providing extracurricular activities such Code Club, and Codekids
  • developing a CodeKids website and blog to give teachers and students the opportunity to innovate
  • supporting the robotics club
  • providing workshops for parents to learn the basics of coding and technology
  • providing coding workshops to teachers in metropolitan Brisbane and north coast regions
  • sharing tips and experiences in many online communities.

As a digital champion, Reid will continue to conduct activities that enhance the new digital technologies curriculum, transform the learning environment, and help people adopt digital technologies.

Reid is nominated by: Humpybong State School
