Keeping seniors connected with digital skills

A dedicated digital mentor, Penny Douglas is passionate about empowering older people to make the best use of technology in their lives. She teaches digital skills to people over 50 to ensure they stay connected.

Penny’s journey in teaching computing started when she joined Brisbane Seniors OnLine (BSOL), a non-for-profit organisation working with seniors to improve their access and take up of digital technologies. After becoming BSOL president in late 2014, Penny has expanded her voluntary contributions beyond one-on-one mentoring to overseeing the day-to-day activities of BSOL and managing the network of tutors and around 1000 members.

As a Community Digital Champion, Penny will support seniors’ digital skills development by:

  • conducting one-on-one tutoring for senior learners with BSOL, teaching others how to use the internet safely and how to get the most out of their computer or device
  • providing training on the use of different social media platforms at the BSOL training centre
  • advocating for continued support to meet seniors digital learning needs and the development of BSOL training throughout the Greater Brisbane area.
