Inspiring the community to go digital
Nitin Gopal, accompanied by his family and with the support of his wife Tina, runs tech support clinics that provide people with the confidence to use digital technology in their lives.
The idea of three generations volunteering simultaneously for the community while learning the ways of Australia prompted them to connect with not-for-profit, independent community organisation Communify. With a keen desire to be engaged with their surrounding community, Nitin and Tina along with their son, Manit decided to dedicate their weekends to volunteering at their local community centre.
Using his experience as an IT professional, Nitin offers a Tech Help Clinic and Job Seekers Club through The Exchange community centre in Kelvin Grove. Tina runs Math and Homework Help Clinics assisting children to use online media for learning support. She also teaches German language classes, using digital technologies as a teaching aid to make student engagement more interactive. Their son Manit delivers coding classes for young children and Nitin’s mother Shashi volunteers at the knitting club at the same community centre every Thursday, knitting blankets for those in need.
Nitin and Tina have also created an e-commerce website for an Iraqi migrant enabling her to sell handmade woollen products. Together, they also teach the small business owner English language and digital skills to help her with communicating with customers.
Nitin has previously volunteered at Nundah Activity Centre where he taught technology to seniors, and at Highland Public School where he assisted with website development. Tina also volunteers at Zillmere Community Centre as Digital Social Media Officer and Nitin helps with the maintenance of their website.
As a Community Digital Champion, Nitin will enthusiastically promote digital skills in the community by:
