Mackenzie Reardon - Round 1, 2017 Champion

Consultation has concluded

Realising virtual reality and entrepreneurial adventures

Self-described youth entrepreneur Mackenzie (Macca) Reardon is a bright spark transforming virtual reality into reality for other young Queenslanders.

Macca is the young entrepreneur in residence at Maroochydore’s Spark Bureau where he curates the Bright Sparks Lab. Spark Bureau is a technology start-up hub. The Bright Sparks Lab is its dedicated space with virtual reality equipment for the region's youth. Macca goes above and beyond to ensure the experience is fun, educational and constantly evolving.

He is also the co-founder of Nexti, a youth-led, profit-for-purpose enterprise connecting young entrepreneurs with a share in collaborative funding.

After starting his first business selling imported products at age 15, Macca left school in Year 11 feeling disengaged with the classroom learning environment. His experience enables him to connect with other entrepreneurial under-18s who struggle with the complexities and barriers to starting up a business.

Macca inspires young people to learn and succeed in the digital world by:

  • participating in and volunteering at Sunshine Coast youth and adult start-up weekends
  • volunteering at hackathon events for intensive collaboration on software projects
  • participating in the Sunshine Coast Generation Innovation Challenge
  • producing a YouTube vlog where he shares his entrepreneurial and digital adventures.

One of Macca’s memorable experiences is taking a six-year-old to Mars using virtual reality to show him the planet he was learning about at school.

As a digital champion, Macca will intensify his efforts to help other young people like himself harness their entrepreneurial attitudes and creativity. He will continue to curate the Bright Sparks Lab, which is open every Wednesday from 3-6pm so students can freely explore the very real opportunities of virtual reality.

Macca is nominated by: Sunshine Coast Council
