Liz Hill - Inaugural Champion

Consultation has concluded

Liz Hill

Creator – online community hub

Liz is a farmer from Southern Inland Queensland with no background in digital technologies but a passion for developing rural communities.

In 2006, motivated by the possibility of establishing an off-farm business, Liz created stgeorgeqld.com, an online information hub for the towns and districts of the Balonne Shire.

The website has a local focus, while also connecting and promoting the shire's businesses and communities to the rest of the Australia.

The platform provides information about:

  • local services

  • businesses

  • community groups

  • events

Following the website’s success, the community requested an online calendar to be created to enable date claiming and event promotion. After investigating options, Liz developed an additional website called stgeorgecalendaronline.com.au, which has the capacity to date claim years in advance.

In recent times with the growth of social media as a communication tool, Facebook has become important for event promotion. This has led to the creation of a Facebook page to complement the existing websites.

Stgeorgeqld.com has won Balonne Shire and Rotary Micro Business Awards (4 times) and resulted in Liz being awarded the Balonne Shire Citizen of the Year 2014 for her community contribution.
