Making the digital world accessible for all
Kein Sheldrake is not your average 12-year-old school student, volunteering his time to refurbish computers and donate them to refugees and migrants through settlement organisation Access Community Services.
The Mabel Park State High School student started his passion project in early 2017 with the hope of providing a computer for his friend whose family was unable to afford one. He says it all started when his best friend told him how lucky he was to own a computer. Teaching himself how to build a computer using YouTube tutorials, he has since gone on to build and donate more than 10 computers to those in need, providing them with an opportunity to gain digital skills.
Kein is driven by knowing neighbouring friends and families can share in his enjoyment by having the chance to access all the exciting information and games he loves so dearly on his computer.
With the help of generous supporters including local MPs, Park Ridge State High School, local community member Alex Gasparillo and a GoFundMe page setup by his mother, Kein has been able to source parts for his computers and continue to help others to get online.
As a Community Digital Champion, Kein will continue to refurbish and donate computers and is keen to teach other children how to build their own computer in the future.
