James Walker - Round 1, 2018 Champion

Supporting rural resilience and sustainability

It is not often that you achieve a national farming award during the biggest drought on record. But fifth generation farmer and innovative thinker James Walker is leading by example, showing famers how diversification into tourism and technology can help rural properties remain prosperous in changing times.

With an outback yacht club, organic farm, and recently built 17.5 megawatt solar farm in Longreach, James has his sights firmly focused on enabling rural and regional areas with partnerships, networks, technologies and digital frameworks for growth.

A firm advocate of digital technologies in agribusiness, and creator of Agrihive.com, James is using tools such as cutting-edge weather forecasting technology and internet livestock auctions to give his pastoral grazing business and other producers an international edge.

James is helping his community create new possibilities quickly in global agriculture by embracing digital disruptive innovation. James received the ‘Farming Ahead’ 2017 Award for Excellence in Diversification for his innovative digital solutions to support farmers during times of severe drought.

James recognises the need to embrace ag-tech, and improve farmers’ financial literacy and business management skills. He has been collaborating with farmers, business, the Department of Agriculture and Meat and Livestock Australia to develop a digital predictive tool to empower farmers to understand their financial situation and make more informed data driven decisions.

James is also passionately encouraging rural producers to collaborate, and find solutions to the challenges facing farmers as they move towards a more profitable and sustainable future. He uses a strong web presence and social media to bring farmers together ‘from their homes, offices, tractors and paddocks’. Some of his activities include:

  • staging industry summits and streaming them live online
  • running case study competitions on social media to generate innovative ideas
  • producing information videos and webinars that educate farmers about ag-tech solutions, and inspire them to go digital
  • connecting famers with city-dwellers through social media to create awareness of what is happening in the outback
  • developing intuitive powerful tool to improve profits inside the farm gate.

James was first recognised as a Community Digital Champion in 2016. As a continuing digital champ, James will continue to use innovative methods to encourage collaboration and digital adoption in the agricultural industry.

James is nominated by: Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.
