Dr Ian McLeod

Using online platforms to disseminate research around the globe

Dr Ian McLeod is a committed science communicator who combines academic credentials with an innovative approach to digital communications to educate, inform and inspire.

Ian is a video producer, research scientist, digital storyteller and communications manager for the Centre for Tropical Water and Aquatic Ecosystem Research (TropWATER), Australia’s premiere tropical aquatic research centre, located at James Cook University.

As communications manager, Ian has increased TropWATER’s online presence from nothing to having the highest online presence of any internal research centre. TropWATER disseminates the centre’s latest science news for students, the general public and stakeholders via video, photos, seminars, Facebook, Twitter and other social media.

Ian mentors other communications managers and gives free workshops to JCU students and staff on using online platforms in research. He also gives workshops in his own time on digital storytelling and science communication.

Ian has also contributed to his community by:

  • encouraging OCEARCH, a not-for-profit shark tagging organisation, to use Periscope to share their research live with the world
  • creating a video on wetlands in the Burdekin region, supported by an electronic media pack, which was the number one story on Twitter for World Wetlands Day
  • promoting Ingham and the Hinchinbrook shire via a video and an online campaign on Facebook.

Ian is also a co-founder and Director of Cinematic Science, a production company with bases in north Queensland and California that uses professional cinematic techniques and socially innovative campaigns to tell unique science-based stories.

As a digital champ, Ian will continue to use online platforms and socially innovative campaigns to disseminate research to the widest possible audience to encourage broader engagement with science.

Ian is nominated by: James Cook University
