Consultation has concluded

Dennis Murphy

Fostering digital tech entrepreneurs

Dennis Murphy is the co-founder and president of Startup Mackay. Founded in 2015 and powered by volunteers, it is the region's leading technology-based entrepreneurship peer group. Its members are individuals with a passion for digital technology, business, social causes and empowering people.

Dennis supports Whitsunday ROC (Regional Organisation of Councils) in forging connections with the startup community in the region, helping to ‘bridge the gap’ between established businesses and the entrepreneurial community to tap into hidden talent.

He will participate in a 3-day council event, travelling through the region to showcase Startup Mackay, Young Professionals, Mackay IT Network and the recently formed co-working space to extend the reach of these groups beyond Mackay.

Dennis also gives his time as an ambassador for the region at digital entrepreneurial events throughout Australia. He has helped to organise:

  • Mackay's first Startup Weekend, where participants learn to create a real company in just 54 hours and which is now an annual event
  • Mentor Blaze, Queensland's premier startup mentoring event, held at six venues around the state.

Dennis is a member of various organisations including:

  • Digital Economy Strategy reference group
  • Engineers Australia
  • Australian Information Security Association.

In his spare time, he is working on a startup called ShareBoat, an online platform that connects boat owners with like-minded enthusiasts.

As a digital champ in his region, Dennis will:

  • continue his work to bring established businesses and the startup community together
  • promote events to enable upgrading of digital skills within existing or new businesses
  • participate in council events to encourage and increase the take-up of digital strategies in businesses.

Dennis is nominated by: Whitsunday ROC
