Andrew Gibbs

Building the capacity to make a better world through digital technology

Andrew Gibbs is creative director at Human Ventures, a social enterprise based in Brisbane. Human Ventures delivers innovative programs that use digital technologies to address social issues such as substance abuse, domestic violence, disconnected and dysfunctional communities, mental health and leadership in remote Indigenous communities.

Andrew uses digital tools ranging from free software through to high-end, professional equipment to empower people to effect positive social change and produce digital advocacy outcomes. He is adept at explaining complex ideas and demystifying digital technology for people from all walks of life, from executives to young people living in Indigenous communities.

He is currently running a series of leadership and digital storytelling camps with young people from Hope Vale, Woorabinda, Cherbourg and Logan as part of the Creative Tracks program (creativetracks.org.au). Participants in the program visualise the future they want for their community, then set goals and produce short digital stories articulating this. They learn all the digital skills they need during the camp. As part of the process, Andrew has provided digital storytelling kits that will stay in the community for future use in documenting oral histories, local events and for digital story production.

His group also delivers community events and public space activation activities across the state using digital technologies.

Andrew also founded and runs the Centre for Audio Visual Experimentation (CAVE) in Brisbane, a place for anyone to explore experimental sound and video production through workshops and performances.

As a digital champ, Andrew will keep building the capacity of people to use digital technology to make the world a better place through digital storytelling workshops.

Andrew is nominated by: Human Ventures
